Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Thank you for all the emails! There will be enough Chromebooks for all students that NEED to check one out. Please send your student to the library with their current Mt. Nebo ID Card when they want to check out a Chromebook. Here are a few guidelines that will make the process easier:

1- I will be at the school from 7:30 am – 3:10 pm only. Please come at the time assigned to you by the administration.

2- Please make sure the student is with you and that they have their student ID card available.

3- Students may also check out a book to read when they come.

4- Last names starting with letters A- F: Tuesday 8 am – 9:30 am

5 – Last names starting with letters G – L: Tuesday 9:45 am – 11:15 am

6 – Last names starting with M – R: Tuesday 11:30 am– 1:00 pm

7 – Last names starting with S – Z: Tuesday 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. Internet Essentials Free to New Customers:
As announced yesterday, it’s even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign-up for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. New customers will receive 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month. Additionally, for all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service was increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. That increase will go into effect for no additional fee and it will become the new base speed for the program going forward.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This letter, dated March 15, is a follow up to the Nebo District letter dated March 13, and other letters that have been sent from your child’s school.  It is intended to provide clarification regarding some general questions that have been circulating.  Please help us to ensure that all parents, guardians, grandparents, or caregivers who provide student support are aware of this information.

NEBO SCHOOL DISTRICT TO DISMISS SCHOOLS -- Repeat                 

As directed by the State of Utah, all public schools in Utah will dismiss beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, for two weeks in response to COVID-19. This is a proactive measure.

CONTINUED “AT-HOME” LEARNING -- Repeat

“Soft closure” or school “dismissal” means that Nebo employees will continue to provide learning for students through online instruction and/or educational packets to continue student learning. Further communication about devices and materials will come from your school.

Educators in Nebo School District will be working on March 16-17 to prepare online materials and/or packets and we anticipate instruction will begin Wednesday, March 18.  Please watch for specific information from your child’s school and teacher(s).

MEALS FOR STUDENTS

Updated March 15 – Students can go to any school in the District to pick up meals beginning Monday, March 16.

In order to provide our Nebo students with “Grab and Go” meals, breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase at normal prices. Free/reduced meals are available for those who qualify.  Breakfast may be picked up between 8:00-9:00 a.m. and does not need to be pre-ordered.  Lunch may be picked up between 11:00-12:00 and should be pre-ordered each day using the phone number and order deadline provided by the individual school. 

CHILD CARE NOT PROVIDED

Clarification from the Governor’s Office:  At Friday’s news conference, “Gov. Gary R. Herbert mentioned that during public school’s two-week dismissal, parents who are unable to be home with children will have the option to bring them to school to be supervised by teachers. This is not the case. 

“School campuses will remain open for the next two weeks so students can retrieve personal items or pick up assignments from their instructors. Some instructors may be available for brief one-on-one tutoring or to help answer student questions about their assignments. It is important to note that schools will not provide childcare of any kind.” (see www.nebo.edu for full official statement)

STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL

Other than for picking up “grab and go” meals, students can be at the school by invitation only.  If they need to come and pick up items from the classroom, desk, or locker, they should contact the school to make arrangements.  Any individual tutoring or small group instruction plans will be coordinated by the school. 

STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL – PART 2

Parents always have the right to determine that their child should not come to the school, even if invited for specific services or instruction.  As always, students and others should refrain from coming to the school if they are sick or have been in direct contact with those who are sick with the virus.

BUSES

At this time a limited number of buses may be seen driving in your communities.  These buses are on specific assignments and are not for the general student population.  Please don’t mistake the presence of buses as a signal that schools are in session.

ACTIVITIES

There will be no extracurricular activities, practices, games, or performances during these two weeks (see www.nebo.edu for official statement).

Dear Parents and Students,

As you might be aware, the Governor of Utah in response to the COVID-19 virus announced earlier today a dismissal of all schools for the next two weeks.  This dismissal also includes all extracurricular activities, events, and practices. We'll be sending information to you as often as we receive it moving forward. I also want to encourage everyone to check our website, and social media regularly in order to stay informed.

INSTRUCTION WILL CONTINUE TO BE PROVIDED

Monday and Tuesday our teachers will be working to prepare curriculum for students that will be accessed using the Canvas learning platform beginning on Wednesday, March 18th.  A more detailed email will be coming next week with specific instructions for students and parents. For those with limited or no internet at home, we’ll be providing learning packets that can be picked up here at the school, also starting Wednesday.  I am making available Chromebooks for student checkout to any student who may need one. Parents wishing to check out a Chromebook should email ellenanita.olson [at] nebo.edu (ellenanita[dot]olson[at]nebo[dot]edu).  These will be made available Tuesday by appointment for pickup.  

MEALS FOR STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BE PROVIDED IF NEEDED

Breakfast and lunch will be made available beginning on Monday for students.  These meals will be served as a 'grab & go' meal. Students will pick up their meals in the cafeteria and take it home with them.  Breakfast will be served from 8:00 AM -9:00 AM, lunch from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. If you would like to have the meals provided to your student, please email rhet.rowley [at] nebo.edu (rhet[dot]rowley[at]nebo[dot]edu) or call the school daily and let us know as early as possible  Students in the Elberta, Goshen, or Genola communities can also access these meals at Goshen Elementary.  Parents should contact the school they plan to use to access meals. Regular meal prices will be charged. Students on free or reduced lunch will continue to receive that service as normal.

Cómo han de estar enterados, el Gobernador del Estado de Utah al responder al virus de COVID-19 acaba de anunciar la destitución de todas las escuelas por las próximas dos semanas. Esta destitución al igual incluye todas las actividades extraescolares, eventos y prácticas. Les estaremos mandando información conforme nos llegue para seguir adelante. También quisiera inculcarles a todos que revisen nuestra página de internet y redes sociales seguido para mantenerse informados.

INSTRUCCIÓN CONTINUARÁ A PROVEERSE.

El día lunes y martes, nuestros profesores van a estar trabajando y preparando el currículo para los alumnos lo cual podrán tener acceso a través de la plataforma de Canvas empezando el miércoles, el día 18 de marzo. Un correo electrónico con más detalles vendrá la próxima semana con instrucciones específicas para los alumnos y los padres. Para aquellos con internet limitado o que no tengan internet en la casa, les proveeremos paquetes que se podrán recoger aquí en la escuela, también empezando el miércoles. Voy a tener chromebooks disponibles para que alumnos puedan pedirlos prestados si lo necesitan. Padres que quieran pedir prestado un chromebook, deberían de mandar un correo electrónico a ellenanita.olson [at] nebo.edu. Estos estarán disponibles a través de cita el día martes para poderse recoger.

COMIDA PARA ALUMNOS CONTINUARÁ A PROVEERSE SI LO NECESITAN.

Desayuno y almuerzo estará disponible empezando el día lunes para alumnos. Estas comidas se servirán para “recoger y llevar”. Alumnos recogerán sus comidas en la cafetería y se las llevaran a casa. El desayuno se servirá de 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m, almuerzo de 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Si les gustaría tener desayuno para su alumno, por favor mande un correo electrónico a rhet.rowley [at] nebo.edu o hable a la escuela del diario lo más temprano posible para avisarnos. Alumnos en las comunidades de Elberta, Goshen o Genola también pueden tener acceso a estas comidas en la primaria de Goshen. Mt. Nebo, as well as other schools in Nebo School District, are using Comprehensive Math Instruction (CMI) to teach our students mathematics and because of this, we wanted to give you some information on the program as well as some helpful tips from our teachers.

Mrs. Amber Capell provided the following information about CMI:

1. CMI looks different, but it is still the same math. 
2. CMI encourages students to connect to math and explain the "why" and "how" in their strategies. Students may have different strategies than the rote ones older generations were taught because they are understanding the math instead of just doing the steps. 
3. CMI produces critical thinkers who are prepared to contribute, discuss, and lead. It requires thought, group work, and presenting ideas in groups and in front of the class. These thinking and leading skills are transferable to any career path. 

Tips: 

1. Let your child struggle and talk things through when the math is different or difficult.

2. Ask questions like "what do you think would happen next?" "why did you choose this strategy?" and "can you see this any other way?" when they get stuck on math homework. 

3. Encourage thinking and explaining skills at home. Let them see you solve complex problems and how you solve them.
