Lauren Cowan – 8TH GRADE

Mt. Nebo Jr. High School

Lauren Cowan, an 8th grade student at Mt. Nebo Jr. High, has been nominated to receive the Payson City’s Mayor’s Award for the month of November.

“Lauren Cowan is one of the most beautiful people I know inside and out.  Her smile lights up a room.  She is fiercely loyal to her friends.  She works hard and completes all her work, then fixes what she missed to better understand” states one of her teachers.

“I’ve never had Lauren as a student” said one Mt. Nebo Jr. teacher.  “What I see is the way she carries herself in the halls.  She’s kind and polite, always holds her head up and moves with a purpose.  She is amazing.”

Her orchestra teacher wrote:  “Oh yay!”  “Lauren is such a hard worker in my orchestra class. I can always count on her to know her part and be a leader to all of the other cellists in her section.  She is a great little musician.”

One of the secretaries said of Lauren “I’m so excited about this.  Lauren is a friend to everyone and super kind!! She always has a smile on her face and is such a good example to those around her.  Good choice.  What an honor.”

“Lauren has been spot on as the type of student we want to exemplify here at Mt. Nebo Jr. High School.  She is so kind and always on task.  She is always participating the lesson as well.  Let’s clone her!”

As Lauren’s track coach, I have had the opportunity to work with her on high jump and long jump.  Lauren was new to this sport, but never gave up, even when it was hard.  Lauren was at practice each day and stayed late to continue practicing.  Lauren was determined to get better and she did.  Her positive attitude helped other teammates as they also progressed.  Lauren was a leader for good on the Mt. Nebo Jr. High track team.

Lauren is one of the great students walking the halls of Mt. Nebo Junior, and we believe that she is very deserving of this award.

Our MNJHS Spanish classes celebrated the Day of the Dead today and yesterday.  They made sugar skull replicas and paid their respects to family members, adults and children, who have passed.  As a bonus, they also shared their Day of the Dead bread with many of us.  It was delicious!

Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skullsmarigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.
