Our annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game was held on Thursday, May 29th. We had several faculty members participate and they competed against the  winners of the student intramural teams. Although there was a big height difference, the students played a great game!!  The teachers pulled out a win in the last few minutes, the final score was 73-69. Thanks to all those who participated and gave us a great game to watch!

Congratulations to the following students who represented Mt. Nebo Junior High School in the Great Kids Awards given by the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce. Each student was given $100.00 from the Utah Community Credit Union and numerous gifts from various community sponsors.

Hayden Heaton is the son of Shelley and Rodney Heaton. Here is what his teachers wrote in his nomination:

Scott McFarland, English Teacher: Hayden is a joy to have in the classroom. He balances studying graphic novels with complex literature like "The Good Earth." Hayden is not afraid to try new things. He is creative and dynamic. He is a leader among the students. Hayden will take charge and show his fellow students what needs to be done.

Sierra Hotchkiss, Science Teacher: Hayden is a respectful and kind young man. He is always willing to work with any student either to help them or working in a partnership.  He always says “hello” when he enters the classroom and has a smile on his face. He is an example to his peers and lives what he believes.  He is a hard worker and excellent student.

Kaylee Torres is the daughter of Jamie Jones. Here is what her teacher wrote in her nomination:

Amber Capell, Math Teacher:  Kaylee is a beautiful 7th grader with a smile that brightens a room and eyes that invite conversation. She is kind to those around her: lending pencils, helping with problems, sharing food, including less popular students into her group, and always being positive. Kaylee is always picking up garbage, straightening desks, or organizing things to make our classroom a happier place. Even without being prompted, Kaylee volunteers to work with and explain math to one of the students who needs some extra attention. She is never seeking the lime-light; she just loves others and seems to see the best in them. I appreciate her example and hope she continues in her passion and integrity!

The Mt. Nebo Junior High HOPE Squad is headed up by one of our counselors, Mr. Hiatt. Students that are selected for the HOPE Squad were nominated by their peers as someone they can talk to, and who is friendly and kind to others. The purpose of the HOPE Squad is to train squad members in leadership and suicide awareness in order to assist and help peers who are suffering from depression or who may be suicidal. We are committed to empowering students to seek help and save a life.  HOPE Squads are an important link to school-based suicide prevention programs; they are the eyes and ears of our student body.
