BYU's Discover STEM Event for 6th-8th grade students on Saturday, March 28, 2020. The Discover STEM Event at BYU is a free and excellent opportunity for students to see real-world applications of mathematics, statistics, science, engineering, computers, technology, and other STEM fields. Students will learn and have a lot of fun as they experience the interactive and interesting activities provided by members of various STEM-related clubs at BYU!

The event will be at the Garden Court in the Wilkinson Student Center on Saturday, March 28th from 9am-Noon. The deadline for pre-registration is Friday, February 28th! Each student who pre-registers will get a free Discover STEM t-shirt. Click here to check out our video, pre-register students, or to see some activity descriptions from last year. Pre-registration will be limited to the first 500 students. Walk-ins are welcome but are not guaranteed a t-shirt. Extra t-shirts are usually distributed near the end of the event to walk-ins.

Mt Nebo Jr Principal McGuire 2 20 (1).jpg 131.26 KB

Last week, we had the wonderful opportunity of presenting all the wonderful things happening at Mt. Nebo Junior High to our Nebo Board of Education.

"Principal Ryan McGuire thanks the Nebo Board of Education for the opportunity to present and showcase some amazing things happening at the Mt. Nebo Junior. He introduced the School Community Council Vice Chair, Kelsey Gardner, as well as the choir instructor, Russ Sumens.

"Kelsey Gardner said, “It has been amazing to see some of the behind the scenes work that goes on to make our school a better place. Thank you to the Nebo School Board for the remodel funding that was provided to Mt. Nebo Junior this year. It has been great to see the school looking refreshed and new.”

A few of the projects that have been completed, or are in the works, including:
•    Created a new parent drop off area--it saved parents lots of time and made it safer for students by fixing the congestion;
•    Removed carpet from the walls and added new paint;
•    Fixed and painted doors;
•    Added new LED lights;
•    Upgraded library; and
•    Added new lunchroom tables."

Nebo School District's Battle of the Books!

Submitted by khristen.massic on

We had two wonderful teams represent us last week at the Nebo School District Battle of the Books, which was held on Wednesday, February 12th, at Payson Jr. High.

What is America's Battle of the Books? Their website states, "America's Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in 3rd thru 12th grades. Students read books and come together, usually in groups, to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read. The student competitions are usually similar to the TV series Family Feud or Whiz Kids styles of competitions."

The list that was used this year featured 20 different titles! In addition, Emma Asay, Esther Corno, Sahaja Rutledge, and Alexa Shutt each read all 20 books!

Interested in participating next year? Booklists become available at the end of April or the beginning of May. The library will have all books available for checkout and Sora and Overdrive will have books available to check out digitally in the "Special Collections" area. As the list becomes available, we will post more information.

This event was featured on the Nebo School District Website as a "Where Are We Wednesday?" feature. See the post here.

sound en∙gi∙neer (noun): a technician dealing with acoustics for broadcast or musical performance

Ms. Carter’s classes were able to hear from Jeff Carter, BYU sound engineer, as they were learning about sound waves! In the video clip, Jeff Carter was showing some samples from a recent project with Alex Boye and the BYU Men’s Chorus. More information on the project: https://cfac.byu.edu/guest-artists/100000-views-in-less-than-a-week-byu-mens-chorus-and-alex-boye-find-a-perfect-fit-with-baba-yetu/

We are so privileged that we have the resources and the teachers, like Ms. Carter, who are willing to invite such amazing guest speakers to show a real-life application of concepts that are currently being learned.

Mr. Rhet Rowley Receives PEAK Award!

Submitted by khristen.massic on

“Mr. Rowley goes above and beyond to make each student and teacher at Mt. Nebo feel welcome and appreciated. He holds open the front door each morning and greets each person that walks through with a smile and a hearty ‘good morning.’ I have also seen Mr. Rowley take extra time and effort to apologize to students if he feels he has been in the wrong. Students are often surprised to be treated this way, and his actions definitely helped the students feel more valued and recognized.”
.
Last night Mr. Rowley received a PEAK Award at the Nebo School Board Meeting! We are so excited to have him at Mt. Nebo!
.
Mr. Rowley was nominated by Mrs. Capell.

Did you know that visiting a college campus while in junior high or high school can help increase aspirations and knowledge to attend higher-education? "Even one day visits have the power to inspire both students and parents and inform them of the
possibilities."
.
.Our awesome counselors have arranged for visits to multiple colleges and post-secondary possibilities for our students. Last week, some of our students were able to visit the Utah Valley University campus and get a taste of what it would be like to attend the university. Next week, 9th-grade students will be able to take a tour of MTECH. See the counseling office for more information.

Term 2 Reward Activity Success!

Submitted by khristen.massic on

At the end of each term, we have a term reward activity to celebrate the successes of our students. Students were asked to have no failing grades, good citizenship, and no attendance issues to be made up. This term we had 522 students qualify by the end of the term! That is up from 427 for term 1!! We are so proud of all the effort and time our students, teachers, and staff has made to help our students succeed! Here is a highlight video of our students participating in this term's reward activity.
